Szeged Street Map Poster

No Hungarian city wears its history in its street plan quite like Szeged. After the catastrophic Tisza flood of 1879 the town was rebuilt almost from scratch, and the result is the elegant pattern of concentric ring roads and radiating avenues that defines this street map. The Tisza river curves along the eastern edge, and from it the boulevards arc outward in tidy half-circles around the Belváros, the inner town at the city’s core.

At the centre the map picks out Dóm tér, the vast brick square framing the twin-spired Votive Church, and the green tree-lined Széchenyi tér beside the town hall. The deliberate geometry, all those nested arcs and spokes, makes Szeged unusually satisfying to render as a city map, with a sense of order you rarely find in older, organically grown towns.
